    School Based Participatory Education Development (SB- PED) intervention in Trincomalee

    One of Muslim Aid Sri Lanka’s thematic intervention areas is educational development. Under our School Based Participatory Education Development (SB- PED) intervention in Trincomalee, we engage all related stakeholders to achieve meaningful and sustainable change in the education sector.

    The project is in its 2nd phase, with Principals, Teachers, School Development Societies, Students, Parents, and Government authorities contributing to the overall goal of increasing access to, and quality of education.

    Recently, we implemented a capacity building programme for teachers, under the patronage of the Provincial Education Department and the Kinniya Zonal Education Department, to train teachers in core subject such as Mathematics, Science, and Languages.

    Active Citizens- Supporting Effective Dispute Resolution (SEDR)

    Active Citizens- Supporting Effective Dispute Resolution (SEDR) project was implemented by the European Union (EU) through British Council, Sri Lanka, partnered with Muslim Aid Sri Lanka (MASL). This project has sparked a positive change within society with various project activities being conducted over the years.

    Active Citizens focuses on social cohesion and peacebuilding and involves youth who are interested and passionate about peacebuilding and are determined to make a change in their community. The youth have been given grants to carry out Social Action Projects (SAPs) to resolve conflicts at the community level.

    One of the Social Action projects being carried out is “Towards a Change”, conducted by the youth in Samanthuraui, Ampara. This project strives to resolve the disputes within communities in Samanthurai and to evoke a sense of unity among the community members through the implementation of various activities.

    The youth are given training on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), awareness on creating and sustaining long term peace and unity within communities, holding discussions with communities to understand and identify their problems and propose feasible solutions.

    Today, a cultural program was organized by the youth where members from every community performed and showcased various acts that displayed their culture and traditions. This event brought all the communities together, united them and allowed them to embrace each other’s cultures, thereby causing a positive change in the community.

    Handing Over Ceremony of School Facilities in Kinniya

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka organised a handing over ceremony of newly constructed latrine facility, and distribute furniture, bicycles, vouchers, school bags and stationary packs to the school and students at T/K/Kakkamunai GMMS. It was a part of the School Based Participatory Education Development Program carried out by Muslim Aid in selected schools in all three Educational Zones in Trincomalee District.

    The chief guest was Hon. H.E.M.W.G. Dissanayaka, the Eastern Provincial Secretary- Ministry of Education, Sports, Cultural Affairs, Preschool Education, Youth Affairs and Rehabilitation, and Ms. Akila Kanagasooriyam, Eastern Provincial Director of Education, Mr. A.C. Faizer Khan, Country Director – Muslim Aid Sri Lanka Office and Mr. A. Nasooharkhan, Kinniya Zonal Director of Education, participated as the Guest of Honours in this event. Further, Ms. Paola Reyes, MEAL Manager at Muslim Aid UK, and Ms. Charlotte Taylor, Country Programmes Officer at Muslim Aid UK took part as the Special Guests.

    The event was organized well and the guests were welcomed warmly by the Principal, Staff, Students and School Community. The function was presided over by the principal of the school, and all who addressed the function praised the work and assistance done by Muslim Aid in Trincomalee District. Mr. A. Nasooharkhan, pointed out the improvement observed in the selected schools in Kinniya Zone after the work of Muslim Aid. Charlotte Taylor, Country Programs Officer, Muslim Aid UK said that the Muslim Aid globally supports the community based education development programmes in replacing Rainbow Family programme which has been mainly one to one support to selected vulnerable and orphan students. Through the community based development programme as a holistic approach it involves various related stakeholders who are part of this process in order to make the intervention sustainable and successful.

    She also said it is great to see the inclusion of government authorities where their input and support is highly important. The Country Director of Muslim Aid Sri Lanka mentioned that it has been working in Sri Lanka since 2005 and one of the thematic sectors of Muslim Aid is educational development which is in line with the 4th SDGs of the UN. He also thanked all the stakeholders for their support and contribution to make this programme successful as well looking forward to continuing the others phases as well with the support of stakeholders. Ms. Ahila Canagasooriyam, Provincial Director of Education, Eastern Province thanked Muslim Aid on behalf of the Provincial Education for their successful functions in Trincomalee district and requested the school community to consider the work carried out by NGOs as their own and continue them actively till achieving targets.

    Finally Hon. H.E.M.W.G. Dissanayaka, the Secretary- Ministry of Education, Sports, Cultural Affairs, Preschool Education, Youth Affairs and Rehabilitation, Eastern Province praised Muslim Aid highly for different projects done by it in his address. And he thanked all the principals and the teachers in Trincomalee district for achieving great successes in G.C.E.(A/L) and (O/L) examinations in 2022. He expressed his hope to work with Muslim Aid in this district and province in future.

    School furniture, school garden, renovated IT Room and Washrooms were ceremonially handed over to the school and school-package and bicycles were given to students at this event.

    Muslim Aid distributed Agriculture, Fishing and Self-Employment equipment to poor families and promoted Model Agriculture Farm in schools

    With the objective of improving the livelihood of disadvantaged families living in villages in the Kuchchaveli DS Division in the district of Trincomalee, an event was held on the 25th of August at Nilaveli A-Fathah Maha Vidyalaya. Muslim Aid provided various equipment and tools for agriculture, fishing, and self-employment worth millions of rupees to different groups of beneficiaries. Muslim Aid Sri Lanka has been implementing this program for the last two years in the villages of the Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretariat.
    The District Secretary of Trincomalee – Mr. Arulraj graced the event as chief guest, along with special invitees; Mr. Kunanathan – Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretary, Mr. Siridharan – Trincomalee Zonal Education Director, Mr. Parameswaran – Agricultural Department Deputy Director and Mr. Faizer Khan – Muslim Aid Sri Lanka Country Director.
    With the aim of promoting diversified agricultural activities based on schools, agricultural equipment and long-term crops were distributed to a few select schools in the Kuchchaveli division to promote model agriculture farms. This event was organized by the school community and Muslim Aid staff, along with the support of beneficiaries. While overcoming challenges such as the COVID-19 crisis and the nationwide economic crisis, these livelihood development projects are being successfully carried forward with community participation and the cooperation of government agencies.
    Muslim Aid’s continuous 17 years operation and provision of humanitarian services to affected communities has helped introduce modern methods in local production sectors and raise the income level of poor farmers, fishermen and youth and lead them to live dignified and healthy lives.
    While introducing the project, Muslim Aid Sri Lanka’s National Director, A.C. Faizer Khan stated that Muslim Aid’s main objective is to reduce the poverty level of beneficiary families and increase their income by using modern techniques that are suitable for the country.
    In his speech, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mr. M. Parameswaran remarked that “Muslim Aid is encouraging farmers to implement new methods and introduce modern technology in the production of farming and training the farming families in methods of income generation so that not a single piece of land is left as a homestead.”
    Mr. Kunathan, the Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretary said “The 13,500 families living in this Divisional Secretariat depend on the income from the three main sectors. Among these, Muslim Aid is making an outstanding contribution in two areas. The organization should also concentrate its attention on the income-generating sectors such as tourism and we should all be involved in promoting local food. I am requesting the director of Muslim Aid to work with everyone to eliminate malnutrition among children.”
    “Muslim Aid Sri Lanka’s current support is timely and invaluable. Beneficiaries should make progress by using this support properly,” said Additional Chancellor Arul Raj, appreciating the continuous contribution by Muslim Aid in Trincomalee District.

    Muslim Aid Sri Lanka is also the part of UN’s Humanitarian Needs and Priorities Plan

    Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence. As a result, around 5.7 million women, men, girls and boys are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, has concerned the multidimensional food security crisis, reducing food consumption by skipping meals, serious pressure on livelihoods and incomes, exhausted coping strategies, running out of vital and essential medicines, gender-based violence and child protection.

    In this regard, there is a call for financial contributions to reputable aid agencies are one of the most valuable and effective forms of response in humanitarian emergencies. Public and private sector donors are invited to contribute cash directly to organizations participating in the Humanitarian Needs and Priorities plan.

    Unity in Diversity

    It is no doubt that the concept of Unity in Diversity and understanding and respecting the mutual cultural identity are crucial to the peaceful and smooth functioning of a country. This has been recognized by the people of Thambalagamam DS Division in Trincomalee District.

    The Thambalagamam Active Citizen team recognized the importance of unity between the different Ethnic and Cultural communities. In order to maintain peace and social harmony within a region, the Active Citizen team organized a Cultural Day were participants from the two communities (Tamil and Telugu) showcased their talents and creativities in a multitude of different performances. This effort helped enhance the unity and solidarity between people as they stand strong against the racial division and prejudice.

    MA Lanka enters Oddamavadi to Develop the Local Industry and Empower the Women

    Economic Empowerment is one of the thematic projects of Muslim Aid Sri Lanka (MASL) to provide sustainable livelihood supports to the vulnerable families. Under this project, MASL has been developing handloom centers with the prime motive of encouraging the women and giving opportunity to engage in the handloom weaving products in rural areas as an income generation activity.

    Setting a milestone to the handloom industry of Sri Lanka, Muslim Aid recently opened up a showroom under the brand name of MA Lanka in Oddamavadi with the patronage of Mr. Thevarajah (Divisional Secretariat) and well-wishers in the area. This successful project foresees the future market potentials in the demand arising from local traditions. The initiative started in Muthur (Trincomalee District) and led to a growth of nearly 80 weaving operations within its suburbs namely Thoppur and Kinniya by end of the year 2021.

    MASL started this project with the objective to provide job opportunities to the school leavers and young girls from the village and now with the expansion of the centres in the eastern part of the country, more and more women are willing to join the industry. Muslim Aid Sri Lanka is also working with the policy of the government to develop the local industries, especially industries like handloom where the income will be generated locally and benefitted by the local community.

    The quality of materials used and the expertise in weaving is not compromised at any means where MA Lanka products are highly challenging for the local markets with its rivalries in terms of price competitiveness and high quality finishing. With proven quality in its durability, many customers seek continuous purchases in retail as well as wholesale markets. The prices are significantly attractive in its affordability of an average person’s income.

    Upon successful demand being monitored in this region, MA Lanka will devote a strategic plan to setup its production lines at Oddamavadi to facilitate more employment opportunities with high quality training facilities by expert trainers. This will enhance to bring out creative imaginations and potentials from new weavers created in Oddamavadi and market expansions. The surpluses will be reinvested back as a charitable initiative to employ weaving capabilities to self sustain in a potentially viable handloom textile environment.
